A 2008 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (JOEM) show that employers can save $1.65 in health care expenses for every dollar spent on a comprehensive employee wellness program.
Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark Inc. conducted a study of its own corporate wellness program, which saved $1.3 million during a four-year period. According to the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine, obese employees:
- filed twice the number of workers' compensation claims
- their medical costs from those claims were seven times higher
- they stayed out of work 13 times longer after a work-related injury or illness than did workers who are not obese
Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for:
- diabetes
- coronary heart disease
- high blood cholesterol
- stroke
- hypertension
- gallbladder disease
- osteoarthritis (which is degeneration of joints)
- sleep apnea/other breathing problems
- some forms of cancer
According to a recent survey by the ERISA Industry Committee and National Association of Manufacturers trade groups and IncentOne (an incentive-program administrator based in Lyndhurst, N.J.), more than 70% of 225 major employers offer health and wellness incentives to their employees.
